Both this year’s strong El Niño as well as record-high temperatures could set the stage for a warm and wet winter in the U.S. this year, federal forecasters said Thursday. An outlook on this winter’s potential weather released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Thursday predicts warmer temperatures in the northern half of the country, while a jet stream flow could bring more average precipitation and storms in the southern area. Experts say that these conditions, which follow the world’s hottest summer on record, could mean no serious cold snaps—but that there could be a chance of snowstorms in some places despite warm temperatures in the north. “There is some hope for snow lovers,” Jon Gottschalck, chief of the operational prediction branch of the Climate Prediction Center, told reporters on a call on Thursday.
